Blue Jays owner Ted Rogers passes away http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/blue-jays-owner-ted-rogers-passes-away/ http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/blue-jays-owner-ted-rogers-passes-away/#comments Tue, 02 Dec 2008 18:41:24 +0000 Cliff http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/?p=68 We have some sad news to report today as Ted Rogers, the Toronto Blue Jays owner and head of Rogers Communications passed away overnight. Rogers was 75 years old when he passed away at his house in Toronto.

Rogers suffered from congestive heart failure that saw his health weaken over recent years. The board of directors for Rogers Communications will form a special committee to lead a search for a new chief executive officer. For the time being, Alan Horn, the chairman of the company, will continue to serve as the acting CEO.

Rogers has done a lot for the city of Toronto as well as the Blue Jays. He helped increase the payroll and improved the Rogers Centre quite a bit since he took over. Mr. Rogers will be missed by many.

A.J. Burnett to opt out of his contract http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/aj-burnett-to-opt-out-of-his-contract/ http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/aj-burnett-to-opt-out-of-his-contract/#comments Wed, 05 Nov 2008 02:18:53 +0000 Cliff http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/?p=67 A.J. Burnett’s agent Darek Braunecker, has released a statement that his client has filled out all the paperwork and will be opting out of his contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. Burnett was to make $24 million dollars over the next two years with the Blue Jays but instead chose to opt out and play the free agent game.

Burnett, posted an 18-10 record with a 4.07 ERA for Toronto this season and established career highs with 34 starts and 221 1/3 innings pitched. He’s expected to be seeking a four- or five-year deal for at least $16 million annually on the open market.

Too bad the Blue Jays didn’t trade his butt during the season when he wanted to be traded. Atleast they would have got something in return during the season.

Halladay and the Jays fall to the White Sox http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/halladay-and-the-jays-fall-to-the-white-sox/ http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/halladay-and-the-jays-fall-to-the-white-sox/#comments Thu, 11 Sep 2008 02:51:43 +0000 Cliff http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/?p=66 Roy Halladay gave up nine hits and five runs over six innings as the Toronto Blue Jays lost to the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night. The White Sox came away with a 6-5 victory. The Jays are still up two games to one in the series as they swept the double header on Tuesday after being rained out on Monday.

Alex Rios provided both runs for the Jays in the eighth inning when he hit a two-run homerun. Lyle Overbay then added a rbi single in the ninth and the Jays then scored another run on Marco Scutaro rbi double. The Jays weren’t done after the Scutaro double as Jose Bautista grounded out to shortstop to score one more run and draw the Jays within one run.

Good job by the team at the attempted comeback even though they did fall short by one run. Blue Jays Blog

Blue Jays are shutout 1-0 against the Rays http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/blue-jays-are-shutout-1-0-against-the-rays/ http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/blue-jays-are-shutout-1-0-against-the-rays/#comments Thu, 28 Aug 2008 01:46:34 +0000 Cliff http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/?p=65 What a dissappointing game for the Blue Jays as they lost to the Tampa Bay Rays 1-0 on Wednesday night. You could tell that the Rays were really playing for something and the Rays were not.

David Purcey was the starting pitcher for the Jays and even though he through a complete game and only allowed the one hit he got the loss because of no run support. Purcey gave up a run in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Carlos Pena. With the loss Purcey is now 2-5 on the season. Congrats to David for the very well thrown ballgame.

The offense out-hit the Rays 6-5 but they didn’t not score a run like the Rays did. As a team they struck out seven times and 11 runners on base.

Blue Jays struggle against the Yankees http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/blue-jays-struggle-against-the-yankees/ http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/blue-jays-struggle-against-the-yankees/#comments Thu, 21 Aug 2008 01:43:44 +0000 Cliff http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/?p=64 The Toronto Blue Jays were coming off a nice win over the New York Yankees but that sure didn’t show on Wednesday night. The Blue Jays only scored one run and were defeated by the Yankees by the score of 5-1. Yeah the Blue Jays once again struggled at the plate and only scored one run.

Alex Rios had the only rbi for the Jays when he had a rbi single in the sixth inning. As a team there were only four other hits as Andy Pettitte really shut them Jays offense down.

David Purcey gave up all five runs and took the loss. Purcey is now 2-4 on the year after he only lasted four innings. Purcey gave up seven hits and was hit pretty hard during all four innings. The Blue Jays bullpen did a very good job to keep the Yankees at only five runs. Brian Tallet, Jason Frasor, and Jesse Carlson all pitched in relief and all did a very good job.

Frasor gives up five runs in the eighth inning as Blue Jays lose 5-1 http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/frasor-gives-up-five-runs-in-the-eighth-inning-as-blue-jays-lose-5-1/ http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/frasor-gives-up-five-runs-in-the-eighth-inning-as-blue-jays-lose-5-1/#comments Thu, 14 Aug 2008 19:58:52 +0000 Cliff http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/?p=63 The Toronto Blue Jays were in line to sweep the Detroit Tigers in a four game series however the Jays allowed five runs in the eighth inning and the Tigers came from behind to win 5-1. It was still a good series for the Jays however as they won three out of four games and are now at 62-59 on the season.

Jason Frasor was the relief pitcher that was charged with all five runs in the eighth inning. Frasor took the loss and is now 1-2 on the season. Starting pitcher Jesse Litsch threw seven shutout innings to get a no decision.  Litsch threw the ball very well as he only gave up four hits in his seven innings of action.

The one run for the Blue Jays came in the fifth inning when Lyle Overbay hit a solo home run off of Armando Galararraga. Galaragga dominated the Blue Jays lineup all afternoon.

The Blue Jays will now head to Boston for a weekend series. If they want any chance at getting back into the playoff race, they need to sweep the Red Sox and go on a nice long winning streak. I think that is just too much to ask for however.  What do you think?

Blue Jays fall 3-2 to the Rays http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/blue-jays-fall-3-2-to-the-rays/ http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/blue-jays-fall-3-2-to-the-rays/#comments Wed, 30 Jul 2008 19:41:24 +0000 Cliff http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/?p=62 The second straight day the Toronto Blue Jays have lost to the Tampa Bay Rays.  On Wednesday afternoon, the Blue Jays lost by the score of 3-2 and finished up the two game series with the Rays.  After winning the first game of the series, the Jays lost the next two and lost the series 1-2.

Scott Richmond gave up seven hits and three runs in 5 1/3 innings to take the loss.  Richmond gave up a rbi triple to Carl Crawford in the first inning, and in the fourth inning a solo home run to Carlos Pena and a run on a ground out.  Richmond didn’t throw that badly really, there just wasn’t that much run support by the offense.

The Blue Jays two runs both came in the first inning when Lyle Overbay hit a two run home run.  Alex Rios was the runner that scored on the long bomb.  Overbay now has seven home runs and 41 rbi on the season.

The Blue Jays will now be off on Thursday as they fly to Texas to begin a weekend series against the Rangers.  I should mention that I will be out of town until August 11th, so I doubt there will be very many updates if any done on the blog.  If you are a fan that would like to do some game recaps, please use the contact us link at the top of the blog and we can talk!

Blue Jays shut out in 3-0 loss to the Rays http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/blue-jays-shut-out-in-3-0-loss-to-the-rays/ http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/blue-jays-shut-out-in-3-0-loss-to-the-rays/#comments Wed, 30 Jul 2008 01:38:41 +0000 Cliff http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/?p=61 The Toronto Blue Jays had all sorts of problems on Tuesday night as they were shut out by the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0.  The Blue Jays had five hits compared to the Blue Jays six, but they were never able to get a rally going and come up with a big hit to score some runs.

Roy Halladay was out pitched by Matt Garza in the game.  Halladay threw eight innings while giving up six hits and three runs to take the loss.  Halladay is now 12-8 on the season.  Halladay gave up a solo home run and a two run triple in the game.

Hopefully the Jays came come out on Wednesday and score some runs.  Who knows if they have what it takes to pick up the win however.

Blue Jays finish off the Orioles with a 7-1 win http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/blue-jays-finish-off-the-orioles-with-a-7-1-win/ http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/blue-jays-finish-off-the-orioles-with-a-7-1-win/#comments Thu, 24 Jul 2008 21:21:33 +0000 Cliff http://www.bluejayshomeplate.com/?p=60 The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Baltimore Orioles once again on Thursday and this time it was by the score of 7-1.  It was the second straight game the Jays have limited the Orioles to only one run.  They held them to one run and won earlier in the day 5-1.  After losing the first game of the four game series, they were able to come back and win the next three games to win the series.

Roy Halladay pitched seven innings to record his 12th win of the season.  Halladay allowed seven hits but only one run while striking out six batters.  A nice quality start for Halladay which we have all grown accustomed to.  Brian Tallet and Jason Frasor both tossed hitless innings in the 8th and 9th to finish up the game on the mound.

Lyle Overbay and Greg Zaun led the way at the plate as both players finished with two rbi each.  Marco Scutaro and Brad Wilkerson both had one rbi as well to help out the offense.

The Blue Jays will now welcome the Seattle Mariners into town beginning on Friday night.  Get out there and support your Jays!  Blue Jays Baseball Blog
